The early forms of castanets are considered one of the oldest instruments in human history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>baroque period<\/strong>, castanets were used <strong>in dance<\/strong> and also <strong>already as a concert instrument<\/strong> throughout Europe. Learning the dance steps and choreographies was part of the education of a man of honour. In the ballets, political statements were conveyed, diplomacy was practised and gentlemen showed their fitness in dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 30%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>Louis XIV<\/strong> was an excellent dancer and castanet player. He danced the sun in the ballet &#8216;Ballet Royal de la Nuit&#8217; at the age of 15 with incredible success. Feuillet (1660?-1710) published in 1700: Choreographie ou l&#8217;Art de decir la danse<\/strong>.\u00a0<br>The notation for the castanets can be seen here on the left, at the top of the musical stave.<br>Incidentally,\u00a0<strong>Emma Maleras<\/strong>\u00a0developed a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/the-bigram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">castanet notation in bigrams<\/a><\/strong>, which is widely used today. You can find a short article about this here.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the history of Spanish dance<\/strong>, there has always been <strong>a lively exchange between the dances of the very dance-loving population and the stage dances<\/strong>, and thus a strong mutual influence. This gave rise to a great variety of dances and new dance steps. And the castanets &#8211; called casta\u00f1uelas or palillos &#8211; were always part of the dances as rhythmic accompaniment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>Ballet<\/strong> also discovered Spanish dances, and the ballerinas of the time studied these bolero dances and enjoyed great success with them. Leading the way was <strong>Fanny Elssler (1810-1884) with the<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/la-cachucha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Cachucha<\/a><\/strong>.<br>From the &#8216;Bailes Nacionales&#8217;, &#8216;Bailes Andaluces&#8217;, &#8216;Bailes de Palillos&#8217;, &#8216;Bailes Boleros&#8217;, flamenco developed in the middle of the XIXth century, became professional and ousted the so-called boleros from the stages. Castanets were initially not common in flamenco styles.\u00a0<br>Many of the important dancers of the time mastered the bolero dances and the newly emerging flamenco dance, e.g. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/amparo-alvarez-rodriguez-la-campanera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Amparo \u00c1lvarez Rodr\u00edguez &#8216;La Campanera&#8217; (1828-1895)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img width=\"658\" height=\"1000\" data-src=\"https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/05\/Fanny_Elssler_ballet_du_Diable_boiteux.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4683 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/05\/Fanny_Elssler_ballet_du_Diable_boiteux.jpg 658w, https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/05\/Fanny_Elssler_ballet_du_Diable_boiteux-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/05\/Fanny_Elssler_ballet_du_Diable_boiteux-16x24.jpg 16w, https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/05\/Fanny_Elssler_ballet_du_Diable_boiteux-24x36.jpg 24w, https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/05\/Fanny_Elssler_ballet_du_Diable_boiteux-32x48.jpg 32w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The playing of castanets in flamenco styles lost importance and in flamenco dancing, the graceful hand movements and hand circles became increasingly important<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Since <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kastagnette.com\/en\/la-argentina-antonia-merce-y-luque\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Antonia Merc\u00e9, the legendary &#8216;la Argentina&#8217; (1890-1936)<\/a><\/strong>, began to play the first castanet concerts again, the castanets have developed more and more from a dance requisite to an independent virtuoso instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some important Spanish dancers followed her example and the concert castanets became more and more popular: Encarnaci\u00f3n L\u00f3pez &#8216;La Argentinita&#8217; (1895-1945), Vicente Escudero (1895-1980), Carmen Amaya (1913-1963), Pilar L\u00f3pez (1812-2008), Antonio Ruiz Soler (1921-1996) &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In addition, Carmen Amaya and Pilar L\u00f3pez began to use castanets in some flamenco styles. This also became more and more popular.
